PTO Meeting Minutes – Sept 11, 2017

Ms. R.’s Report

  • See school calendar
  • Middle School Open House – Wednesday, September 20
  • Elementary Open House – Tuesday, October 3
  • There are now just under 500 scholars attending Columbus Gifted Academy
  • Clubs will start soon, after staff finish working out details for the new building

PTO Board Reports

President’s Report – Christina McMenemy

  • An events calendar – it is available in paper form and online 
  • Once the PTO Office is unpacked, forms will be available on the door
  • Daniels is looking for volunteers to help CGA participate in the Cardboard challenge on October 7

Vice President’s Report – Robert Meeker

  • Over 50 membership applications received; people whose application has been entered in the database should have received an email
  • Membership brings voting rights, board eligibility; access to the directory;
  • Cost is $5, sliding scale. All membership fees will be used for a student emergency fund.
  • Memberships received by October 1 will be entered into a drawing for a $25 gift card (3)

Treasurer’s Report – Jennifer Hambach

  • Review of expenses from summer and start of the school year

Secretary’s Report – Valerie Rake

  • Will be doing a membership directory this year; more information will be forthcoming

Communication Chair’s Report – Melody Reed

  • Managing communications through email; Facebook; and Twitter. Will also be looking at how to use the district’s PeachJar service.
  • Will also lend grant-writing expertise to the PTO

Events and Activities

  • Reminders
    • Middle School Open House – Wednesday, September 20
    • Elementary Open House – Wednesday, September 27
    • Skating Party at Skate Zone – October 2 – Glow Theme
  • NovemberFest –  November 17 –

    • Will be organized differently this year, to place the focus on the scholars and providing a way for them to show off their talents: art fair, performance space, video presentations
  • Fundraiser & Membership drive – mid-September through mid-October
  • We will be conducting the fundraiser through the Columbus Foundation’s “Big Give”
  • Fall spirit wear order completed.  There are a few extra items that will be made available at events.  There will be an online spirit wear sale in November.

Voting Agenda

  • 2017-2018 PTO budget
    • Budget items described. Q&A about the various items
    • A motion was made and seconded to adopt the agenda. The motion was approved by the voting membership.
  • Through Ms. R, the teachers asked whether the PTO could purchase 6 ELMO Projectors so that there will be at least one per grade level.
    • This 3D projection tool was described. R said that 5 were purchased last year and several teachers have their own.
    • A motion was made and seconded to allot up to $1800 for the purchase of ELMOs. The motion was approved by the voting membership.

New Business

  • Questions and conversation about how the PTO and teachers would help parents work with their gifted kids at home.
  • Conversation about the MathPLUS festival at PAST Foundation, including mention that PAST does an in-school version of this.
